Truck Accidents
Truck accidents are some of the most serious collisions that occur on the road due to the size and weight of big rigs, eighteen wheelers, and tractor-trailers. These trucks can be up to 20 times heavier than a passenger vehicle and, thus, when a collision occurs the damage and injuries are often severe.
In 2017 alone, there were 450,000 truck-related collisions that occurred in the United States. Of those 450,000 collisions, 344,000 of which resulted in non-fatal injuries and 4,889 of those resulted in fatal injuries. This was a 10% increase over 2016 of injuries related to collisions with trucks and a 5% increase in the number of those collisions that were fatal. The majority of these fatal crashes (63%) occur between a truck and passenger vehicles while 20% occurred between a truck and a bicyclist, pedestrian, and/or non-motorized vehicles.
These truck accidents happen for a number of reasons, but they often occur due to safety regulations being ignored. Commercial truck drivers are regulated in terms of when and how they can drive a large truck, but they are also under pressure to meet delivery deadlines which causes them to ignore certain safety practices. Sometimes these drivers operate on very little sleep which can also be a factor in a collision. Sometimes the cause is mechanical failure due to improper or delayed vehicle upkeep. All these reasons can individually or together can cause a truck collision and you need an experienced attorney to investigate any potential cause of the collision.
